Friends,
from which store online can I buy the astroturf(hard carpet) for my Stars? Please see the attached photo of the carpet I am looking for. Also is this the correct carpet? I find my timothy hay a little messy.

You can buy indoor/outdoor carpet at any Home Improvement store. It will be much cheaper at that type of store. Its always more expensive to by things at a pet store. But don't buy the kind that has long nap. The tortoises might try to eat it. Did you try the aspen bedding? It comes in a short-stem variety that isn't as messy as hay.

Not tried Aspen bedding yet, just had my Stars for 2 weeks and I am very new with them. Still got a long way to go. did a search on the net and even the Aspen bedding looks like it could get messy. I might just stick with the hay if I have no choice. I want to minimise the cleaning up's.

What do you mean 'messy'? That goes with keeping tortoises.

Are you more concerned with what you consider 'messy'.. or more concerned with what's best for your tortoise? I'm serious! It wasn't a few hours ago they were enjoying the hay.. and now that's not what's most important.. to YOU.

YES.. I'm indignant because it seems the love of these tortoises does not come first and foremost.. the "keepers"? convenience does - and because others are feeding that ego and emotion instead of encouraging you to do what's best for the torts. Keep the hay!!! Your tort will thrive soooo much better.

Cleaning up after your animals is just part of the job. Something that has to be done. I understand your trying to make it easier on yourself, but you also have to take into consideration the animal's comfort. One reason to have bedding instead of carpet is the bedding helps to absorb the liquid when the animal urinates. If you do spot cleaning every time you see something that needs to be cleaned up, its not as big a job.

Good luck in finding something that works for you! :)

Hi Terry,
You know what, you are 100% correct. If it's whats best for them, than the hay it shall be. I love my torts and i want whats best for them.

I think your habitat is bare and boring. The tortoises are beat on by the light there's really no place for them to go away from that light. There's nothing fun for them to climb on or over. I think you need to do a little more research and set those tortoises up better. They are a wonderful gift to you and you are not doing right by them...they need a better substrate, some rocks or wood to climb on/over, a pool, some plants. Use your imagination and do better by them. I am not going to do the research to tell you what they need. YOU need to research to see what they need and you need to set them up bigger and better.

Noted, will do more homework, thanks. On another note, I just bought a hut for them today.
