At the very hottest point of the basking area I'm getting 105 on my digital temp gun. That heat is only about the size of a penny, the rest of the basking area is more in the 95-100 range. Since it is such a small area will that be ok or should I move the bulb back some?

Greetings...how large of an enclosure are you talking about in total? A large enclosure gives your tort plenty of room and space to find the comfort zone in / near the basking "zone".

  • I'm wondering how you have narrowed the hot zone down to the size of a penny?

The enclosure is 3 feet by 5 feet and I narrowed down the temperature's range using the temperature gun. Started at the hottest point then moved out.

Our baby, who arrives Friday is right about 2".

I think I misunderstood your second question. The hotspot itself isn't the size of a penny, the hottest point of the hotspot is that size.

The over all basking area is probably 10" x 10" that is the right temp for basking the 105° spot is right in the dead center and that heat only covers about the size of a penny.

Hope that makes better sense.

Awesome. I suspected as much but the guides I was reading said 95°.

Thank you! What should the coolest point be?
