Boggy Bedding!

I made the wrong choice of putting organic topping soil in my torts eclosure?
i put his water dish in and he dug inder it and tipped all the water everywhere....all the compost/soil is boggy and discusting really wet im also scared when it dries she may get stuck..im going back to ZooMed Forest floor...

hi tyler, maybe you could a a heavy water bowl that she cannot tip over. thats what i did.check out pancake in a pool thread. good luck, lindy

I have a zoo med it is very heavy but she dug under it and tried to hide but her shell tipped it.

Does she have other hiding places? If not,you should provide some. Dirt gets wet,then dries out-that's what it does. Torts get muddy in the process-it's what they do. I guarantee you she won't get stuck in the mud. If you're looking for a cleaner substrate,try putting a thick layer on cypress mulch over the dirt. It holds moisture well but the top layer dries out fairly quickly. It's good stuff.

I agree with jackrat.....a tortoise is suppose to be dirty....slop in mud from time to time and in an indoor enclosure I bet there is not a getting stuck issue :D. Let her slop around a bit....great humidity spike LOL
