Box turtle ..

When you see here sniffing the ground a lot, in the water a lot. Sometimes they dig test holes first.

Box turtle ..

Give her a good nesting place & watch. Also watch to make sure that he isn't making her miserable. A female that can't get away from endless mating can clam up & not get enough access to food or water. It might be fine, but it's something to watch for. Generally it's better to have 2 or 3 females per male.

Also watch their general health. Most people prefer to quarantine a new animal for a while

I now weigh them every week to see if she wakes up.

Box turtle ..

I would separate them so she doesn't get stressed out. Put up to 12 in of good digging substrate for laying the eggs.

Are you saying that she is asleep through the week? That is not normal at all. Separate them now.

That's OK. You are doing very well. If you get stuck, try Google Translate http://translate.google.com

Tortoises will only lay eggs when they are happy that they have found the perfect place to do so. It may be many months until the female is content to do so. She may not lay eggs at all.

Most tortoises are solitary. They do not like having company. This means that they fight in captivity. Sometimes, the fighting is not obvious. All you notice is that one of the tortoises becomes very quiet and perhaos does not eat properly. They do not get lonely. They like living alone. Your female might prefer to lay eggs without the male chasing her.

If you see bullying or fighting then you must separate them. This might have to be permanent.
