Bumps?

I was asked to rescue a RES today (not at all unusual) he appears healthy, clear eyes, good color etc. My estimate is that he hatched last spring so about a year. However, he has 2 bumps- one on either side of his head right under the red markings. They are under the skin and completely round like little BB's. I have owned, rescued and fostered many RES (as well as Yellow bellies and western painted) and have never seen anything like it. Like I said, he appears otherwise healthy and swims normally. Has anyone encountered this? I will attach a picture when I'm able. Thanks!!

double ear abscesses. They need to be lanced. What you see on the outside is also bumping in on the inside, making it hard for the turtle to swallow/eat.

Thank you- I'll work with our vet to see what I can do. I can only imagine what it must feel like trying to swallow and breathe with those abcesses! Do they pose any other health issues that you are aware of? Thanks again!

They usually occur because of an infection - not necessarily at the ear location.

My turtle had the SAME THING when I rescued her, only the abscess was only in one ear. From what I understand it is somewhat common in turtles. A vet did the surgery on her about a month and a half ago and she is doing great now. She is totally healed up. If your vet needs to speak with a vet that has done the surgery, then let me know. I know my vet would gladly speak to yours.

Thank you! I appreciate the offer! How old/ what size was your turtle when they did surgery? I'll talk to the vet next week.

My kid is actually about the same size as yours. Its a fairly simple procedure as long as the vet knows what they are doing. I know that probably sounds a bit harsh... but I have a story back behind my turtle and would rather not have you go through the same experience.

Agree with Yvonne about it being abscesses. This seems to be a common problem with sliders that have been poorly maintained. But the upside is that it also seems to be rather easy to clear up.
Best wishes!
