Here are Bux and Toni my Caspian greek, T.g.buxtoni, hatchlings. Toni is doing great as evidenced by her green moustache. She only has one eye and still doesn't stick her head out very far, but she can eat for England. :D

Congrats Danny,

What's your take on the 'split scute'? What do you believe causes them? We've all had them!

Thanks Terry, Dee and Isa :D

Terry it can be any number of reason why they come out with extra scutes. To high or to low an incubation temperature, To high or to low an incubation humidity (happens with turtles, but not sure about tortoises) and it can also be genetic.
I have a female pancake with 2 extra symetrical coastal scutes on each side of the front of her shell, her mother has this and her first baby has this also. So it's being passed down from generation to generation, all the babies don't have it though.

That scute pattern is quite interesting on the one little baby. I've seen where the center scutes are off-center and into each other, but the little triangular "extra" scute is one I've never seen before. Congrats on your little babies. They're really cute.

Yes you have some adorable Caspian greeks, T.g.buxtoni, there Danny. I love that little "triangular extra scute" Her shell pattern is what makes her unique. I know one strives for perfection but sometimes its the imperfections that make us special. Congrats and cute names, Bux, Toni :D
