Cactus Questions

So my boyfriends father brought home this cactus somewhere around 20 years ago and planted it at his garage. We live in NC and the soil where it was planted was almost solely that iconic Carolina red clay, so it never really took off (this is my hypothesis at least). My boyfriend said that the pads never got much bigger than a few inches and none of it ever flowered. I dug up some of the remaining newer looking growths and planted them in some organic topsoil and compost and this is the product after only a few weeks. I also went to the local international market and bought some new pads that I always buy for Tippy. Planning on scabbing the ends and planting them in order to harvest the new growth for her since I know the larger pads are high in oxalates. How does all this sound? Thanks for any input and/or ID :)
