Thanks gave him a tiny floret and he devoured it lol - his diet is all weeds and dark green leaves and he sometime eats the alfalfa hay in his bed. He's never tried fruit but maybe once a week I give him a very small piece of something different - he's tried cabbage, broccoli, courgette, carrot and beansprouts. He seems to get very excited when he gets something new to try lol. Do you think it's ok to do this once a week?
Your tortoise should have a diet of leafy greens to stay healthy. There are plenty around in the wild and in your grocery store that are suitable. Make a list of what you can get and then look them up on The Tortoise Table Plant Database which will tell you how frequently they can be fed, if at all... and explains why. http://thetortoisetable.org.uk/site/plant_database_14.asp
Fruit should be avoided as it is too high in sugars and your tort cannot digest them properly which could make him sick. Some brassicas, like cauliflower, contain goitrogens that can interfere with thyroid activity and could damage the liver and kidneys so they should not be fed.
Thanks for the link so many conflicting views on everything to do with tortoise care! Just want to do the best for the wee guy . His diet is 95% home grown weeds which I planted in his indoor enclosure and the garden. I have as I said given him small tasters of other veg maybe once a week but will be more careful what I give him from now on xxx
