Hi,

I am considering applying for a CBW permit for a radiated tortoise. Although I understand that approval is highly unlikely, I’m willing to pursue the process regardless of the time or fees involved. My main question is whether any breeders currently hold active permits? as applying would be pointless if none remain.

Regards,

As I understand you can acquire a radiated in the state of California without a lot of hassles. You have restrictions on your tortoise going forward. You cannot sell it out of state to anyone. I am not in California but have seen many ads on morph market advertising radiated hatchlings for sale only to people in the state of California. So California and probably Texas and Florida are the easiest to navigate the rules (my guess)

Only "legitimate AZA facilities" get them anymore. You don't need one if you buy one in your own state. I do believe our own @Markw84 is breeding them now here in CA. You can't get a better started healthier baby.

Why not come to Mesa Az for our reptile conference this month to get your answers

I purchased a couple in California, but I’m looking for high-yellow. It seems they’re uncommon in California and more often found in Texas and Florida.

Sorry. Your government has decided that you don't get access to those anymore. I have not yet found a legal way around this unless someone wants to give you one for free. Or you'd have to move to the state where you want to buy and become a legal permanent resident of that state.

Its not right, its not fair, it makes no sense, it does NOT help the species in any way, but this is indicative of that state of our rapidly eroding freedoms in this country.

As one who held a CBW Permit from 1977 till 2019 (when I purposely let it expire due to lack of buyers to whom to sell), I can tell you that you would be wasting a lot of your time and $200 trying to get a CBW Permit.

There are high yellows from some of my bloodlines in CA. You just don't see them offered very often. You could try making a donation to the Turtle Conservancy (Behler Center) in Ojai and see if they will allow you to buy one of theirs. I sold quite a few Radiateds (and other species) to the owner over the years, and some were quite nice. They are still producing babies yearly as far as I know.

I couldn't make it this year but I would love to attend next year. Do you know the date and location for the next year?
It is always Wednesday field trip, Thursday, Friday talks - the week before Thanksgiving and at the Mesa Convention Center (host hotel Delta Marriott Mesa)
