I'm trying to redo all my enclosures, now that I've learned so much on this site. I've been reading a lot about using CHE bulbs in them, but I can't for the life of me figure out what CHE means! Could someone explain it to the dummy here? :p

Thanks!!!

A CHE is a ceramic heat emitter. It is just an element that heats up to give off heat evenly without giving off any light. It's great for night time use and on a thermostat during the day and night to keep the ambient temperature.

It requires a ceramic socket as shown in the picture. The " black thing" is the CHE.
You can buy the socket at a hardware store.

Duh! That makes so much more sense now! Thanks!! :)

Is there a brand/type of CHE that is generally recommended as being a better quality?

I got mine from petsmart. It was just their brand. I think it's called "All living things" I use the 150 watt on a thermostat set to 82 degrees on my cool side 24 hours a day. I know you can get them cheaper on amazon though if you have time to wait. I paid around $32 at petsmart, but on amazon you can get one for around 17.

Awesome, thank you so much! Now I have to start researching how to set up my enclosure using it. :D

How do you control the CHE output with the thermostat? I didn't know that could be done.

You just plug the thermostat into the wall, plug the CHE fixture into the thermostats plug, and set the dial where you want it. Watch the temperature and fine tune the dial setting if needed.

Thanks! That's much more efficient than me raising and lowering the fixture :-D

Haha yeah that's what I was doing for a while and I got tired of it because it seemed like I could never find the perfect spot. You can get a zoomed thermostat on amazon relatively cheap. Really easy to set up just like Tom said.

so it's kind of like being on a dimmer?

Pretty much. The thermostat has a thermometer on a cord that you put in the habitat to sense the temperature. Once the temperature reaches the setting you put on the thermostat it will automatically turn the CHE off. If the temperature drops below the temperature you set on the thermostat it will turn the CHE on until it reaches the desired temperature.
