Hi, sorry I'm a greek tort owner and am thinking maybe at some point ill add a redfoot to my collection... from my understanding all cherryheads are redfoots but not all redfoots are.cherryheads? The red head is just a gene passed down from a certain location?

Thank you to those who help clear this up

Correct about the all Cherries are Red Foots but not all Red Foots are Cherries. Madkins and N2TORTS know way more than I do, but here's what I know.

Cherries are a specific "sub-species" of the much broader Red Foot Tortoise. Red Foot Tortoises have many different "Sub-species" found natively in all sorts of places in South America. Cherries are sometimes called Brazilian or Eastern Red Foots due to them being mostly found in Brazil and surrounding areas. (There are even some arguments that there are different "sub-species" within the Cherry "sub-species")

They're a little more expensive due to the Bright Red colors that they typically show. They also do not live up to the "Dwarf" title that some people have put on them. Yes they are, on average, smaller than the typical Northern Red Foot but not by much... maybe an inch in SCL... Otherwise, they are very similar to any other kind of Red Foot. Typically outgoing and personable, but it definitely varies from tort to tort.

Probably a lot more than you were looking for but I hope some of this clears things up for you a little.

Also, couldn't agree more with Wellington. N2TORTS has some beautiful brand new hatchling Cherries. He also has some Hypo Red Foots that are by far the coolest tort I've ever seen, but I'm not sure if they're up for sale. If you dig through the last couple days of posts within the Red Foots section, you will find his posts with lots of pictures! Super cool to look at! Hint: His titles are typically in all caps lol

I just wanted to add that although cherries are usually known for having more beautiful coloring you can find other redfoots with nice coloring if you look hard enough! :)

Also, I agree with everyone's comments on N2TORTS he has some beautiful babies! I am getting my next tort from him and he will have some available for sale very soon. (and yes he is selling the hypos) You can also check out his web page TortoiseCove.com!

Hope you decided on a redfoot they are amazing torts!!

You are right except there are no currently recognised subspecies of reds-they are a regional variation.

No, that's fine, in 5 years time you'll probably be correct-lots of DNA work being done on reds and yellows at the moment.

You may want to rethink avoiding cherrys- they are generally considered a bit more hardy than most red-footeds.
