Correct "English"?

Since I'm older than everybody here -- except of course Yvonne! -- the correct way to say you have plural redfoot tortoises is to say you have plural redfoot tortoises.. or you have more than 1 ( one ).. or state the number you have.. or when I was seriously breeding them I would say I had alot of redfoot tortoises ---- and then no doubt someone would ask how many is alot.. or is it a lot .. etc., etc. !!!

Spellcheck always tells me "alot" isn't correct but I disagree. If it isn't a real word, it should be.

I say TORTUS, but quickly, as a one syllable word

?? I tried and tried, and it still comes out 2 syllables unless you omit one of the vowels. Now, New Orleans IS only one WORD = pronounced Norluns.

Since the plural of cactus is cacti, shouldn't the plural of tortoise be torti ?

Spellcheck says no but my tortoise says yes.

I googled the etymology of the word "tortoise." According to them, the plural is "tortoises." But I prefer torts, myself!!!
