Good morning Daisy,

I know you'll be looking down on Jacky on her 89th birthday whilst celebrating with dad who also has his birthday today. Here are some photos that I took yesterday:

Good evening Daisy,

I hope you are looking after mum, dad and nana. I gave Jacky a cool soak today and then I put her in a cooler enclosure. I shall stop soaking her next week and then I shall gradually get her out of the enclosure.

Dear Daisy,

Jacky hasn't emerged today so it looks like she's definitely going into hibernation! However I shall always say goodnight and good morning to you and all our friends. I will never forget Jacky waking up on that dreadful day and I will never her being there when I got back but I will never forget you.

I'm having trouble with memories of you today because Jacky is now hibernating and it is my brother's birthday. He never asks after and he has never asked how I was after your death. I feel very sad about that but you will always be in myself and Jacky's hearts.

Some people often don't understand how attached we are to our torts and how much they mean to us. My own family don't understand the lengths I go to, to make sure Lola is well looked after and why I always put him first. To them he is 'just a tortoise' but if I lost him I would be as devastated as they are about their cats and dogs. Only other tortoise owners fully appreciate how losing them can affect us.

Daisy had a lovely long happy life with you and is part of your family history.
After so long I think we not only grieve for torts that have passed, but also for the loss of a shared history and the link between us and family members we have lost.

I hope you and your brother soon reconnect. Would it help if you wrote to him explaining how you are feeling?

Oh thankyou Lyn,

I think really my friends here are the only people that understand. I've lost pets before and each one is special but to lose a tortoise after is just something else. They are a link to family members and to the past and also people who've never had tortoises as pets don't know what special personalities they have. Angie mentioned something about this when talking about Zola.

One particular memory of Daisy was during lockdown down when she was pushing the pink sack at the back door which I thought was in her way. I moved it to the other side of the garden path and then after dinner I went to put Jacky and Daisy to bed and I found only Jacky in the tortoise house. I went round and round the garden looking for Daisy and then in the house (she has turned up in the telephone directory before) and then I thought maybe I should try the pink sack. I picked up the pink and the paper rubbish went everywhere and revealed a sleeping tortoise . You couldn't tell her off because you couldn't stop laughing. It was also funny to look out of the back door window to see what looked like the pink sack moving by itself .

I didn't have a very good night as I felt I may have been coming down with something and I did have to take paracetamol yesterday. I sent a message to our friends on the other thread and hope they enjoyed reading. I can't afford to get ill with the pupils exams on Saturday.
