You know you are a dedicated tortoise owner when you spend an hour crumbling hay by hand, and separate out the tough chewy stalks, so you can be sure you are feeding them a varied diet, along with fresh weeds and grasses, and organic spring mix. The reward was watching my hatchling walk past the spring mix and chow down on the pre-soaked hay. :)

Lol. I am not that dedicated, I have up on timothy hay, but orchard grass hay is a lot softer n easier to feed. Even my leopards will eat it.

@AzAngel, I have a 40 gallon breeder tank (kind of small but it's the best I could do for now) the top is screen. It is hinged in the center, so I wire the lights yo the back side if the screen snd cover the top with aluminum foil to hold in the humidity. My average range is 75-85% humidity. Here in hot Nor cal, I keep my A/C set at 77-80 degrees in the house, so sometimes it gets too hot, so I shut off tge basking light for an hour, or prop open the top to let out a little heat. I doubt I will need to do this in the winter

Nice! Even with my 3 year old sulcata I pick out the hard stuff. I should have started the hay younger, but I soaked grassland tortoise stuff. Now I just put the Jay over his mazuri! It'll be nice when he just eats the hay as is.
