We went to an exotic vet today, and he recommended to worm our torts once a month with panacur.

Does anyone else do this? Just curious.

Thanks!

No. Worming a tort is sressfull for both tort and me, I only worm when needed as indicated by a fecal. I don't worm any of my animals monthly (except heartworm for dogs).

If parasite eggs are detected in a fecal sample, you de-worm the tortoise now, then again in 10 days to catch whatever eggs have hatched since the first de-worming. There is no need to de-worm monthly. The de-worming medication is actually a poison. You don't want to poison your tortoise on a monthly basis.

In the olden days it was common practice to de-worm twice a year, in the spring and in the fall. Now it is recommended to look for the parasite eggs in a stool sample and only de-worm if parasite eggs are present. But yes, Panacur is the anthelmintic of choice for tortoises.

How is de-worming done?

I use Panacur horse de-wormer. I draw up the correct dosage into a syringe (with no needle). Then you have to pry open the tortoise's mouth and squirt the de-wormer down the tortoise's throat. Its not pleasant for the tortoise.

That dosage is 10 to 25mg/kg(2.3 lb). As Yvonne says it is an unpleasant procedure for the tort and keeper.

Figure that there are 36.8 oz equaling 1043.28 gm (28.35 gm= 1oz) in 1 kg (2.3 lb). If you have a 1 lb tort than he would get 4 to 10 mg (10 to 25mg/2.3 lb). As Yvonne says you can get it at farm supply, the brand I get Safeguard for cattle ( same as for horses without picture of horse therefore cheaper). The wormer is actually called fenabuzole or something similar. This dosage is from Merck manual for reptiles.

Pumpkin: from what I understand it helps clean out the worms they have, but doesnt kill all the worms. So they may still be infected. Eggs etc in the intestinal tract..

Make sure you use only 100% pumpkin, not pumpkin pie mix. Walmart carries Libby's 100% pumpkin in the pie fillings section.
