I'm a recent tortoise owner (3days, Russian) the substrate I'm using is http://bit.ly/riWDiA
After just 3 days of having the substrate in the enclosure its lightened in color substantially and I was curious if it was getting too dried out?
Here is a picture showing the old substrate and some added today: http://i.imgur.com/RicCU.jpg

Is this a problem? If so how can I fix it?

I use cypress & soil on the cool side and cypress and sphagnum moss on the hot side under the basking light. Every other day I dump about 3 pitchers of water in the enclosure. I will do it daily if it is hot and my humidity starts dipping in the low 60's. I use a vivarium and a plexi top to keep the humidity in and everything moist. If you put some sort ofplexi top over part of your enclosure it may help.

Hi Phil:

Your substrate is just fine. All you need to do is pour more water on it and mix it around with your hands. I don't normally have indoor habitats, but when I do, I pour a whole pitcher of water in and stir it all around. The lights quickly dry out the top layer, but it stays moist underneath.
