drippy nose question

Searching isn't turning up much because it always leads me to gunky colors, trouble breathing, and lethargy/behaviour changes so it doesn't match up with what I'm experiencing...

We've had Mr. T for exactly 4 weeks today. Admittedly his substrate was way too dry the first 48hrs. About 3-4 days in, his right nostril started dripping and occasionally bubbling clear liquid and this side of his nose has been like this every day since. He also tested positive for strongyle and has no had 2 doses of panacur but we're still about 1 week out from the repeat fecal check. Because he's acting normally and eating like a pig the vet is holding off on thinking about antibiotics for now hoping that clearing up the parasites and having him get settled in his new home will take care of his nose. Everything looked great at his first vet appt. on Day #10 - just, obviously, paying attention to his nose.

It's still dripping on that right side - enough where substrate sticks to it/in it. Some days are "worse" than others. He hasn't gone anywhere near the water dish in his table but the first thing he does in the soaking tub (still doing this every night) is stick his head in and then blow stuff out. If I see him up during the day with gunk on his face I've been wiping it off with a q-tip which he seems not to mind as he comes over when he sees me coming at him with one...unless he keeps hoping it's food?, lol. Everything is still 100% clear in color but sometimes after a soak it's kinda solid - like I can wipe it off and hold it/pinch it between two fingers. It's not sticky per se but it's obviously not dry since it came out of his nose. If it happens tonight I'll try to get a picture.

His 2nd dose of panacur was on Monday and yesterday was the first time he really ate since then but he went after it and inhaled it the same way he had been the entire time he's been here. He hasn't peed or pooped to the best of my knowledge in 3-4 days though... He buries in for the night after his bath and dinner and he still gets up in the morning and does the normal wandering/basking/etc. during the day. So he's been active/interactive and acting normal and seems to be back to his normal piggy self (we'll see how tonight goes) which I believe is a pretty good sign that I don't really need to worry too much?? Google isn't much help unless I'm searching for the wrong thing - just talks about colored mucus and lethargic torts.

So what could this be??

Sorry that was all so long!!

Nose discharge shoud be watched closely. If it was right after a soak, but if it is happening throughout the day, I suspect RI. While most of the time RI discharg is colored it can be clear as in the case of my russian, clear as day. Since appetite is good I would take a wait and see approach for now. As always keep him warmer for now.

Yes, temps are warmer for sure. Any thoughts on the idea that it could just be transition stress and/or related to the parasite issue? I was reading that sometimes parasites can cause "cold-like symptoms"?

What are your four temps?

What are you using for heating and lighting?

Where are you?

What substrate are you using now?

Basking spot is upper 90s (sometimes just over 100 right now) which dissipates out to eventually the low 80s...cooler area is 70-73...overnight is 64ish.

ZooMed PowerSun.

MN

50-50 mix of coconut coir and organic top soil...small area near his water dish has a little bit of reptibark mixed into the coir/soil.

Wet nose is not automatically a RI. Stress can create a clear nose drip. Parasites can add to it as well. Stress alone can create havoc on a tortoise...a drive to the vet, being handled by the vet---any injections the ride back home--the ill feeling as a result of the panacur---all are stress triggers....also, dry dry environments can create wet weepy eyes and nostrils, which collect soil/substrate to the wet surfaces which in turn can also irritate the eye or nose that it is stuck to....whew, what a cycle huh :p

Well, the good thing is that outside of the clear nose hose the tort is business as usual, right? If yes, I would also offer the tort increased temps in the enclosure--- I would offer a basking spot of no less than 100-105 and let the remainder of the enclosure cool down to NO less than 80 degrees...day AND night....

Now, when you bump the temps you need to keep in mind that this can aid in drying out/dehydrating the tort at a quicker rate...so daily soaks of no less than 30 minutes (and I would do at least two a day) are beneficial for hydration as well as offering a speedy way for the nasty parasite load to be moved out quicker, which will likely then aid in the tort feeling better sooner---see, the panacur is a poison designed to kill the parasite, so the tort has to move the dead and dying out so they are not setting in the gut rotting---ewww)

Also, you can offer wet types of food during the treatment time to help move things along as well....you also can offer a couple warm humid hides in the enclosure so the tort can also regulate that need...
