I took in this awesome Tortoise last August and have been trying to learn as much about her or him (?) as I can, we have created a thriving outdoor environment, providing a safe insulated night box/ house and we went thru a successful controlled brumation this past winter. Only to now be thrown a curve ball by reading on multiple sites and papers that she could be a he! Can someone please help confirm for me... I have attached pics of "Dutchess" in every angle.. the plastron is indeed indented slightly in the middle, does not burrow, we have to make the shallow burrow for her, although she prefers spending time during the hot days in her warm hide area we built up off the ground with shade or pacing in shade, she gets lots of different weeds, abd I planted greens and I soak her pretty regularly with our warm temps here. But sure would like to know if Dutchess is actually Dutch! 😏 Any info is welcome! Thanks to all!

While the tail and cloaca DO look female, see those two little nodules starting to form under the chin? Those only show up in males. And when he's ready to breed, they get much bigger.

Thank you Yvonne, I think She/He is about 5yrs old now IF what the previous person that had her was correct in their information they gave us, but maybe younger, they were not sure what she was either, they said a Sulcata, I said nope.. at best a desert Tortoise or Texas Tortoise 🤔 Does not burrow at all, and does go into brumation, slept from November to March.

Looks like a male Desert tortoise.
What's his diet and how often do you give him a good warm soak?
Duke is the male version of Duchess, by the way. But what's in a name anyway ☺️

Tammy.. it was a play on the word because my husband built the enclosure from wood he obtained from a project called Dutch at work ( we just assumedshe was a femaleand called her Dutchess), but you are correct Duke would be his name.
We feed him kale, collard greens, some romaine, radicchio, he has access to a fresh leaf lettuce and varieties of cactus but he doesn't have any interest in the cactus at all, I give him a little mango once every couple weeks, or 1 strawberry but he prefers the little bites of mango.
I soak him almost daily right now because the temps have been so high here in Arizona, I keep him pretty cooled down, he doesn't like to dig though, he hates the underground hide, prefers the above ground box we built for him with an internal hide in it.. it safe for him, its insulated and I have a Inkbird thermostat that monitors the box and his internal hide for me, there's a fan that pulls the hot air out of the box that my husband just installed, like you have in your bathroom 😏
On the triple digits days I brought Her/him inside for those hottest part of the day, just didn't want to take the chance, it was 110 out there!!
But I now super puzzled if this is a boy and his actual age, we are bonding for sure!
