Hello. I have an Eastern Box Turtle hatchling, and I'm having doubts about how I'm approaching hibernation. The turtle will burrow for days at a time, and not really emerge. I try to let it be, but worry after 3/4 days about soaking/hydration. When I retrieve it, its eyes remain closed for a few minutes as if it were indeed hibernating. When in the water, it will drink A LOT, which has made me think it's important to keep retrieving every few days. Should I let it be? Or continue waking it up every few days to soak/eat?

I went through the same thing. I elected not to let him hibernate.
You will notice changes in behavior at different parts of the winter but keep him right and he should be fine. You can switch over to a more marsh like environment using spagnum moss but please read the care sheets. They are really well done while you wait for the talent to show up!

Good luck....pics are nice...hint hint

I don't hibernate my box turtle either. Can you post pictures of the enclosure? What temperature is his enclosure at? I personally would not let him hibernate because you just got him and he still needs to get aclamated to his new surroundings. My opinion
