I've seen postings of torts having "extra scutes". Being the newbie that I am, just wondering, what does this mean -- how many should a normal tort have?

Three normal and one with extra scutes.
The light one on the bottom has 2 split schutes.

I see that. Does that mean anything or does that just happen?
Extra scutes occur when the tortoise eggs are incubated at a slightly too high temp. Its only cosmetic and doesn't effect the tortoise negatively in any way.
It sometimes happens if the incubation temperature is on the high side, and then again, sometimes it's genetic. Quite often it means the tortoise is female.
Has no bearing on health. I have a couple with extras.
