Feeding outside

Every time I try to feed her outside (dropping the food in the enclosure), the ants get to it before she does.
Any ideas?
The good news is she does eat the grass inside the enclosure.
And do tortoises eat throughout the day or 1 big meal?
Maybe I just bring her in for awhile for feeding then back out again...

They will eat/graze throughout the day, likely resting during the hottest parts of the day.
As for the ants eating before her, set her by the food when you put it out.

What species of tortoise are we talking about?

Eliminate the ants in the enclosure, near the enclosure, and on as much of your property as you can. Ants can literally swarm and kill your tortoise. Terro ant baits are a relatively safe way to do it, and Amdro Ant Granules are another way. Be sure your tortoise can't come into contact with the granules while the ants carry them to their queen and colony.

Tortoises graze through out the day if given the chance.

Set up the tortoise in a large box outside on a table with the table legs in buckets of water six inches deep so the ants cannot get to it.
Until you manage to get rid of the ants altogether in your tortoise's yard.
