In another thread Jacqui had mentioned figs for Hingebacks - I decided to get some and see how they went over.

Holy cow, they went crazy for them!

So did the Redfoots. I purposely bought some that were a bit overripe, so they were kind of smushy, and they were immediately gobbled. I tasted one, and they have very little sweet flavor, but are extremely fibrous.

I guess I am going to look into getting a cold hardy fig tree myself!

My Yellowfoots really go for the leaves too. I planted a 5 gallon fig tree in their enclosure and they've eaten off all the lower branches.

Pio loves figs as do all my boxies. I cover the tree in the fall with a lot of big heavy duty black garbage bags, and take the cover off in the Spring. So far so good. Last year we got lots of snow. I took it out of the ground this Spring and cut it down and put it in a BIG pot. This Fall I am going to put it in the garage...water it sparingly and see what happens. The old Italian guy across the street told me to do this. Right now it is loaded with figs. He also told me to cut off some stems and put root tone on the end of the branch....stick it all the way down in the soil and cover with a big plastic bottle ...do this in the Fall, and it should take root. So I'll try that too.

You know it's pretty sad, when I get more jealous of the fruits/plants folks can feed to their tortoises, then I do of the tortoises they can get! :D :D:D

With the figs I have been looking for years for some to try, because of the fact in several lists about Hingebacks I found them listed as loved food items. Glad to know yours did indeed love theirs! ;)
