I only started using the UV bulbs recently. I bought the light stand and 100 watt T-Rex Flood Active UV/Heat from LLLReptiles.

I have the stand positioned between two enclosures, baby box turtles and baby Manouria tortoise, and it is higher than the 12" recommended, appx. 15"
I would think that the 100 watt would be fine for a Russian.
I like the stand because you are supposed to have the light positioned so it is vertical, not at an angle and you can do that with the stand.
