I was fortunate to visit Egmont Key (Tampa Bay Area) over the Memorial Day weekend with my family.
We spotted several gopher tortoises on the island and it was beautiful to see them enjoying the day foraging for berries.
I was in Amelia Island and there were tons. I think I counted 10 different ones at our resort alone. My wife is from Florida and they are commonly referred to as, "The Landlords of The Dunes". They are amazing to watch, except for when the tourists believe they are sea turtles and try to "help" them back in the ocean. I learned that from a life guard who routinely rescues them.
Yes. We’ve spotted a few on our trips there. Always fun to find an abandoned lot & see it full of tortoise burrows & observe their behaviors. Of course some ppl look at you like you are“crazy” when you are plopped down in an overgrown area watching & waiting on Gopher torts.
