You should definitely invest in a temperature gun so you can make sure things stay in the right range for him. They are about $30 and worth every penny. Mine came from Harbor Freight tools so it has a good warranty too.

What is the regular temperature they should be in? I live in San Diego so it's literally always 75 degrees here or warmer during every month except dec/Jan/feb
Please, if you are going to keep it, follow the advice given on this forum. These people know what they are doing with tortoises and turtles. Good luck.

Even if it were a desert tortoise, which it is not, they don't live in San Diego naturally and so there are regulations governing both keeping desert tortoises and releasing them.
