DOCTORAL ASSISTANTSHIP - EASTERN BOX TURTLES Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana

Job Description: A fully funded PhD position focusing on Eastern Box Turtle genetics is available beginning January 2009. The goals of this study are to utilize a suite of hypervariable genetic markers to: 1) assess population size, dispersal, and gene flow of eastern Box Turtles in Indiana, 2) assess levels of genetic variation and structure in Box Turtles at local, statewide, and regional scales, and 3) evaluate the efficacy of assigning individual Box Turtles to genetically distinct populations across the Midwest. Thus, the student will be responsible for the field collection of samples, microsatellite marker development, and assessing levels of genetic structure for this species across multiple spatial scales. This project will include both field and laboratory components combined with extensive travel to local, statewide, and regional field sites during the summer months. Transportation and off-campus housing will be provided. The student will be co- advised by Drs. Gene Rhodes and Rod Williams.

Qualifications: A student with an Master of Science in herpetology and/or genetics is preferred although exceptional applicants with a Bachelor of Science Degree will be considered. Applicants must have a strong work ethic and the ability to work both independently and as a member of a research team. Good interpersonal skills are essential. The selected student will work closely with a diverse group of state wildlife biologists and private landowners, and will supervise field technicians. Prior experience with genetic techniques (e.g., PCR, microsatellite genotyping, and DNA sequencing) and GIS would be very beneficial. Potential applicants are encouraged to visit
