I have been wanting a tortoise and I have read up about what care they need and stuff but lots of places tell me different some say keep them outside some say keep them inside. I was wondering if you could help me and explain to me what care they need so I know for definite and also which breed is best to get for a beginner? Thanks x

Welcome, ilovemusicalbethan!

There is no ONE way to keep a tortoise. Different species require different care.

In my opinion, all tortoises belong outside. There are some species that do better indoors than others, but ALL species benefit from living in an outdoor enclosure. I feel that it is doing a disservice to any tortoise for someone to buy him with the intention of always keeping it in the house.

There are times when it is necessary for a tortoise to live indoors...when he's ill, when he's very young, when the weather is too cold for outdoors.

A good beginner tortoise is a steppe tortoise (Agrionemys horsfieldii).
