Getting my first tortoise - Help!

Hello there, My name is Michael and I am looking to purchase a Russian tortoise In the near future. This will be my first animal ever outside of dogs so I need your help!

I live in Calgary AB where the weather is far too cold for tortoises to live outside however, the humidity should be alright at 40-50% outside.


I need help with the following things

1. Lights

2. Food

3. Anything else that you guys would suggest.

What age is the tortoise you are getting? That makes a difference. There are great caresheets on this site for both hatchling and adult. I would start with those. Do you already have an enclosure? If so post some pics and we can help you with it. I thought I had everything all set before I got my three and then I joined this site and found out I had a lot left to do. Don't take it personal, it's all for the benefit of your tort.
