I grow them indoors and have a black thumb as well. I have them near an open window, but they still only grow about 7-8 inches and die on me, with most seeds not sprouting. I think I'm just over/under watering them. Hopefully someone could give you great advice!

Most of the best plants in the seed mix require full sun to grow well. To grow those types of plants indoors would require plenty of good quality grow lights, and ensure the intensity is high. Fall is a great planting season for grasses and weeds can flourish this time of year too if given good water, so that seed mix should give you a good 6 weeks or more of good growth yet this year in VA. Plant in flats you can move indoors under good grow lights when the weather turns cold.
