So, I have been noticing that there are two hard lumps (internal) on either side of his tail. I took a picture and it's a little hard to tell, so I drew a picture to show what I'm talking about. Does anyone have any idea what this could be?

I wouldn't swear to it, but I THINK it's quite ok.

He is also almost constantly doing what looks to be attempting to defecate (pulling head in shell, eyes swelling, legs pulling in). I have been treating him for constipation but am worried it is something else. I was going to take him to the vet but he was just there and got a clear bill of health so I am not sure if that would be helpful. Could it be a urate stone? If so how could I tell?

If it worries you and you feel that your tort is not getting better go to a Vet for a check up. Blood testing and an xray probably will give enough info to see what is going on.

Sorry for the late response, very busy. I am trying to avoid going to the vet as I am beginning to doubt whether the treatments offered are really the best, and I checked the veterinary literature and I don't think even the vet would know what is going on. I have determined that it is not immediately life threatening, and despite symptoms similar to constipation, the nature of the issue does not seem to allow for the expected possible complications. I am doing research, observing behavior, and hope to figure out what is going on very soon. I am going to begin a new thread soon of my research to hopefully figure this out once and for all and am eager to share what I learn with the community.
