I have a baby sulcata and was wondering what the temperature needs to be under the heat lamp during the day. I have two 50 watt heat lamps going right now and the temperature is only at 92 degrees. I think I might have my shelp up too high where one of my heat lamps is hanging and the other one is clipped on the side. Also if i have two heat lamps, should they be next to eachother?

Also, are the powersun bulbs okay for uvb? I have heard the coil bulbs are horrible for them so I need to replace it asap. I know the best way to get them uvb is sunlight from outside, but I would like to have a back up for time when I am not able to take him outside.

If I lower my shelp I think one 50 watt heat bulb should be ok and I could use the powersun in the other fixture and i read that gives off heat and uvb. So, if i have a 50 watt heat lamp and a powersun heat and uvb bulb next to the other one, how high should it be from his enclosure and should i get a 100w powersun bulb?

temperature needs to be under the heat lamp during the day.

A basking spot should be offered of 95-100 (not entire enclosure, but the basking spot only at this increased temp)

the other one is clipped on the side.

Please figure a way to have your light fixture in a secure fashion and directly shining straight downward and not at an angle....

I would not use a coil bulb in an indoor enclosure at all....just my feeling on this .....

What should the shade temperature be during the day?

Also, I bought a ceramic heat emmiter for the night. The temperature needs to be at 80 degrees right?

Coil bulbs have a history of causing eye damage in tortoises. So yeah, replase it as soon as possible.

A 50 watt bulb is probably alright for a hatchling but you'll want to be able to hang them further away in the future. To make sure that the tortoise won't get burned and it won't drag anything under the bulb that could burn. Unless ofcourse he goes into an outdoor enclosure.

Day and night temps should never fall below 65 ish ----but a more desirable night temp should be about 75 to 78 ish....now, if you are going to use the high humidity/constant humidity method then I would not let the night temps (any time of day actually) fall below 80 degrees ever.....

However, if you are not running the high/constant humidity method, then you can get away with the temps in the night dropping a bit---if offering a dry cooler place that is....again, if you are going to run high humidity in the entire enclosure I would not go below 80 degrees...

Click the links in my signature for baby sulcata info. They need it warm all the time. 100 degree basking spot all day and never below 80 any where at any time for babies. It does not get cold where they come from.

Tom, this is my enclosure. I got a 60 watt ceramic heat emmiter for during the night, but it's not getting up to 80 degrees. Do you suggest a 100w or the 150w? Also, the whole enclosure should be at 80 or just underneath the ceramic heat emmiter?

You are probably not going to be able to control the heat or humidity with an open top enclosure. It's like trying to heat your house with no roof. There is a thread on "closed chambers" that should give you a few ideas about how to create a closed chamber for your tortoise. When you do the heat and humidity control will start to get much easier and the tortoise will be more comfortable.

basking around 100, warm side 90's, cool side 82ish. no area cooler then 80 at all.
