Hey everyone! I've been lurking here for the past week or so in preparation of getting a tortoise. I've had box turtles in the past and have always been a turtle/tortoise lover. My girlfriend and I have been preparing to buy a young/baby Russian, obviously doing all the research and getting all the equipment set up before purchasing the animal itself.

Just out of curiosity we went to the local reptile shop today supposedly run by "specialists" and it was just disgusting how they kept their animals. They had a baby sulcata in an enclosure that was about 8 inches by a foot and a half. He was only given a small dish with just plain lettuce in it and the lid for that dish had about a teaspoon of water in it. The floor of the enclosure had only paper towels on it. We had already planned on finding a breeder on here but this just bolstered that decision.

Anyway, this forum seems awesome so far and appears to be full of people who actually care about the lives of these animals. I'm very excited about moving forward with this new adventure!

Hi, and welcome to the forum!

We have several folks on here who raise Russian tortoises. Another place for you to look would be rescues. Do a Google search for "tortoise rescue" and see if you can find one in your town. Sometimes the SPCA has turtles and tortoises too. Of course, rescues and animal shelters are a take what you can get place. But it's rewarding to rescue an animal.

Welcome to the forum. If you don't want to end up with a house full of tortoises that you just can't leave in deplorable conditions, avoid the pet store. They are so often awful. Glad you're going with a breeder. How they are started makes a huge difference on survival chances for babies.

Yeah I looked into rescues but no one in my area has any right now, the local wildlife refuge that I used to volunteer at usually scoops them up immediately.

Hi! So where roughly do you live? Perhaps we could point you towards somebody.
