My tortoise toby is a very adorable hermans tortoise. However, his shell is not as heavy as lydia(his wife :)) his shell has a little hole in it and i read that any damage to their shells cause them to feel pain and i am worried that he is ill. When i took him out of hibrination, he had chill and thanks to the lovely weather, he is fine now and eating perfectly. I have tried to give him calcium powder for tortoises but so far there is no improvement. What shall i do next? Please help i am thirteen and had them all my life i will be traumatised if toby dies :'(

RE: Advice ?

Hi tobyandlydia(heart):

Welcome to the Tortoise Forum!!

Well, it's in a funny place for it, but it looks a bit like shell rot. Ask your mum or dad to buy you a tube of athlete's foot creme. Clean the area with warm water and a soft bristle brush, dry it well then dab on a bit of the creme and rub it in, making sure to get it inside all the edges of the "hole."

That's a very good looking tortoise.

What would you like us to call you?

..and may we know appx. where in the world you are?

Some good looking Hermann's!

If you have a male and a female of approximately the same size, the female will tend to be noticably heavier (I was discussing this w/ another Hermannii-fan here and we both think it's probably because a healthy female will be laying in the fat for strength when it's egg-laying time)...

Yvonne's advice about cleaning the "boo-boo" and smearing on some athlete's foot cream is a valid idea, but as long as he has a good appetite, is eating healthy food, and is getting unfiltered sun, he'll get well pretty quickly.

Have you offered the two of them cactus pads? Lot's of calcium in those and my 4 get cactus pad 2-3X a week.
