Sometimes when Toby wakes up one of his eyes are like this, it doesent last long and clears up after about 20 minutes, sometimes it also happens when he has a bath, I'm gonna take him down the vets tomorrow, any advice in the mean time?ImageUploadedByTortForum1391210282.273963.jpgImageUploadedByTortForum1391210298.756534.jpg

It's been 10 minutes and now his eye looks perfectly fine, could it be a pice of of hay or substrate irritating it when he sleeps?

what do you use for lighting and what is your substrate? Have you had Toby long? and is this the first health problem with him?

Are they open and fine the rest of the day? I don't see a cause for alarm if they open up ten minutes after he wakes as you say and then he's perfectly fine. Is it both or just one...if just one is it always the same one? Does it appear swollen because it just looks closed in picture? Can you see anything in the eye?

For lighting we have a 100W basking lamp and a coil style UVB which is less than ideal but according to our reptile specialist at the zoo, based on the distance of the lamp and Toby's age should be ok, he was at the vet at the start of this month and everything was fine

And his substrate is a specialty treated wood chip designed for Russians so he can dig and scratch around in it

They seem fine after they open but it's red and swollen before then, I can't see anything in his eye, it always seems to be the same eye but it only ever happens on random occasions, he can go weeks and weeks without it, have it for a day and then it clears up

I still suspect a pice of hay or his substrate is maybe jabbing his eye as he sleeps because he always sleeps with his head out and he burrows himself right in the hay.

I'd try getting rid of the coil bulb for a week or so, you can even just replace it with a regular light bulb. The lack of uv won't be an issue for just a week. So take the coil bulb out and see if it gets any better.

Ok thanks, I'll leave it off for a few days and see what happens :)

Also, what is his diet? What are the temps? The tort looks a little dry to me, I mean his skin is a little dehydrated looking....have you soaked him and/or does he soak himself that you know of?

Absolutely lovely tort by the way....

Thanks!
Toby's diet consists of organic veg, store bought salad and fresh weeds (when avalible)

He gets soaked atleast three times a week and his temps range from 29-36 in the day and 18-22 at night

This photo was taken right before his soak so his skin was a little flakey

Thanks for the reply!

I FOUND OUT WHAT IT IS!!

Someone on another forum told me they could eat onions and when I was hand feeding him today he took one bite and right away his eyes swelled up and he started tucking into his shell, I raced him to the bath and he drank some water and his eyes went back to normal

I am so so angry, I googled it and it says they can't eat them, but this account that told me they could has been shut down which makes me think it's a troll, any opinions??
