Hey guys. So, I just got a Herman tortoise. I put him in his enclosure and let him do as he pleased (after a nice soak) and so far all je tries to do is nurrow. He's looking at the food and trying to eat thenfake rock dish, instead. Not sure why. It's nicely crushed up kale. Going to get him weeds and such in a little while. He's soo tiny. I think just a few weeks old. Any advice? I just want him healthy and happy

I just got a Hermann's too, and he's behaving the same way. We pop him under his lamp in the morning and leave him some breakfast, then head out to work. When we come home the food's gone and he's dug himself into a corner of the table. He'll eat any food we offer him and he's pretty alert, he just seems to like digging. Of course, we can't tell what he's getting up to when we're out!

The breeder I got him from said he might take a while to adjust to his new home and be a little timid at first, so I'd guess your little guy will be the same.

Thank you, makes me happy to know he is acting normal. I had figured it would take asome timw for him, jiust wasn't sure if the instant digging was good or not. I keep watching him, at least until I go to work.

Baby tortpoises instinctively know they're a potential meal to many other creatures, so they hide a lot. In time, it'll grow bolder.

Is it inside or out?

We have a 6 year old Hermanns too... She recognises when her lamp goes on in the morning, pops out for something to eat then wanders about or basks under her lamp. When we switch the lamp off she heads for her hide and digs down till only the top of her shell is visible. Its a defence and security thing. As long as Peaches has somewhere to dig and something to climb/hide under she is pretty content [TURTLE][THUMBS UP SIGN]

Is because your Herman is just acclimatising to its new surrounding it needs to have some time and hopefully it will "come out its shell" literally speaking haha but just give it a week or so and it this continues take it to a qualified vet

Update: Tonto is now coming out some. Not eating greens but will tear the tomatoes apart. Not sure what to do with that part. I was woken up by my boyfriend today because the tort was out near his water and just relaxing. She/he is getting less shy. I just talk now instead of touching anything but food and the light. :)

Oh, and he is an inside tort for now. I'll be bringing him outside for some small amounts of time to get sun and fresh grass. He's just so small haha.
