My hermann's male has been trying to mate for the last 2 months. All summer my torts did not try to mate (only in early may) now the male is determined and I don't know if the female was receptive. Anyway my female has put on some weight and her tail looks a little swollen. . .could she be gravid? Btw I am near Philadelphia and my torts have been inside since mid September and the male is 5" about 5-7 years old and the female is 7" and about the same age.

The tortoises may breed at any time. Wild tortoises maintain seasonal breeding but captive tortoises (especially if not hibernated) may breed at various times throughout the year. Male hermanns will often attempt to breed whenever a female is available.
Your female could be gravid, time will tell! If she becomes hyper activeor digging with her hind legs, you better provide a suitable nesting site.
