I took in the sideneck turtle this afternoon. May I please know the Latin name? I think its female, and I apologize for the poor quality of the first picture. I didn't realize the sun would show so brightly in the picture.

Thanks, Danny. Even with a poor quality picture you're able to come through for us.

Well, I GOOGLEd the turtle and read most of the sites that came up and nowhere does it say if they hibernate or not. The map shows a range of 3/4's of Africa from the bottom of the Sahara desert to the bottom of the continent. Does that mean that there might be some areas of cold winters? I'm going to try to find the best care sheet to print out for whoever adopts this turtle, however because we get frost and some freezing during our winters, I need to know if the turtle can be kept outside all year.

The ones from South Africa can take some cold weather, but your's is from central Africa so wouldn't see any cool weather. No I wouldn't leave it outside all winter.

Pelomedusa subrufra are my absolute favorite sideneck.
That was a rescue?
Dang, makes me wish I lived in southern California.
Almost.

Yes, a rescue. It was being kept in dirty, green water...a 10 gallon tank. However, this is the sweetest dispositioned turtle I've seen in a while. Looks like she has a big smile on her face!
