Welcome to the forum!

Could you send a photo of his/her underside, we might be able to define it's gender.

It doesn't need a friend, they do best alone.

A terracotta plate (meant for potted plants) with water is the best water dish.

Your tortoise is probably a Greek tortoise or Herman's tortoise, though I am not sure.

Please read this, it has important information for everyone new to turtles and tortoises: https://tortoiseforum.org/threads/info-for-new-people-please-read-this-first.202363/

We can help you with getting started and buying the stuff it needs to live a happy and healthy life!

Hello and welcome!

You can also check the list of foods to order from LuLu here (linked post and another one is down the thread): https://tortoiseforum.org/threads/h...all-i-feed-it-is-lettuce.213699/#post-2113826

Tortoises need water. Besides water dish, you may bath him twice a week in warm water: use an opaque plastic tub, large enough to turn around and high enough so he can't get out, pour a little water up to a level where his top and bottom shell meet - usually 3-4 cm, water should be warm to touch (30-32C). Keep him in tub for 15-30 minutes. Water should be be warm all the time (you may use two tubs for that or bath him outdoors IN THE SHADE). Never leave him without supervision.

He needs his own space, it's unsafe to let him roam around your house.

Please, read the link The Four Toed Edward posted above and ask any questions!

Welcome, You definitely have a tortoise. The care for a tortoise is totally different than for a turtle. I am not good at identifying species. But pics of your enclosure. Will be helpful for us to get you in the right direction.
Don't use information that a pet store gives you. Most of the time it will be wrong. Also what ever equipment you buy from them. Will also probably wrong.
