What other way is their to give back to your community than to give back to our future work force. Today after finally working with the school board and administrators I was able to install a small start up aquaponics system for Fort Concho Elementary in San Angelo, TX. Me being only 22, I feel this to be a huge step forward to giving back to the community and also inspiring the youth as well as community. You should have seen the smiles on the kids faces, and the news people got my phone number too lols; they want to start up a system as well. Bigger plans are to come, they will be receiving a grant to build a 20x20 greenhouse, as well as adding a 700gal system ( also added two 5000gal rainwater retrieval systems to water raised beds as well as topping off aquaponics system). Also, today I basically taught the students the basic concepts of aquaponics and fish health (Do's and Don'ts) ....yes they have my number on speed dial just in case things go south ( 4-5 mozambique tilapia will be introduced next thursday:p) Anywho, I would like to challenge each and every one of you to do something like this in your own community in the next coming years as it is so self rewarding.

Godbless,
Austin

Good for you. Sounds like you really enjoyed doing it and they really enjoyed it too.
You should feel real good. Again, CONGRATS:)

Very cool! I have a small indoor aquaponics set up. We want to do a big one so we can have Tilapia. How did you get the funding for it?

The fish chamber is what? 30 gallons? Seems small for 5 fish that reach well over 10 inches.

My aquaculture setups have used 3-400 gallon bottom tanks.

Aquaculture and aquaponics have few similarities. Sorry Jd3 but I don't have tilapia for pets like I would a tortoise.....there's a separation between food and pet....and I would never eat a tortoise.

Hahaha Dean, so true....always has to be the critic. This is a startup system Jd3.... I know what I'm doing but I'm glad you expressed your concerns.

They're still animals no? They still have brains and hearts and deserve to be treated properly.

A few in there would be ok, but small. Over crowding it won't do anything but teach kids they should do that. If you don't think that translates into the rest of their animal husbandry you're missing a Big part of educating kids.

You'll grow happier, healthier, bigger, tastier fish if they aren't crammed in there so thick you can walk on them.

Perhaps something other than tilapia, since this is just a starter system to show the concept. The fish likely wont be eaten will they? So why not something s little more reasonable.

Again, these are fry...not full grown....in less than three months they will be in a 700 gal system.
