Hi Everyone!

My Sulcata, Rex, has a couple of strange behaviors that I want to get more info on.

1st: Rex seems to have a slightly weepy, right eye. it was clear yesterday and today it looks as though it has dripped on his cheek and jaw. The eye looks good and not swollen or anything, just the wetness.

2nd: When Rex eats he will tilt his head up and take a deep breath that results in a snorting noise. It concerns me that he will choke everytime he makes the noise but he acts like it is nothing and continues eating and snorting. His nose is clear and dry.

Thank you!!

To me it sounds as if Rex may have a Respritory Infection. I would suggest taking him to the vet to see what he has to say. It should be able to easily be overcome by such a big guy. A little TLC, antibiotics, and a warm heat lamp will do wonders!

Do I need to find a specialized vet? I also posted in the intro section, but I just got him from a foreclosure so this is all new to me.

Take a look here: http://tortoiseforum.org/tortoisevetlist.html#arizona

If none of the vets listed in the above link are near you then I would call around and see who has reptile/tortoise/exotic experience prior to taking him there.

Thank you soooo much!! I have a call in to Avian Exotic Animal Clinic... (they are closed on Wednesday) hopefully I can get him in tomorrow. :D

Did you ever take Rexie to the vet? Do you remember the cartoons where the character would eat something and you'd see a huge lump go down the throat? RV eats like that. she'll take mouth-full after mouth-full, and when she's got a lot collected, she'll swallow, and you'll see a huge bolus of food go down. She'll exhale, and inhale, and go on eating. I'm wondering if this just is normal tort eating pattern.

my thoughts.

oh my goodness!! i cant believe i forgot to post an update. Sorry!!! So the very next morning she woke up and her eye was clear and just a little spot of crusty from where the wetness was. I called the vet and just watched her. To make a long story short she probably got dirt or something in her one eye and the snorting was a defensive sound she was making because there were 4 of us crowded around and staring at her when she ate. Because she is new and we thought it was so cute we could hardly resist!! :) hehehe Now that she is getting more use to us she doesnt make the snorting noise at all unless she is carried.
thanks for checking back!!
