I prefer dirt for box turtles, as they love to bury themselves. It's messy, but they seem happier. I mix a little fine grade orchid bark with dirt I dig up outside.

Yes, it's fine. I prefer peat moss though. It's similar but much much cheaper at lowes or home depot.
