So Ruby, who was having a lot of eye problems, seems to be doing better already since we replaced the coil uv bulb with the MVB! Both eyes are open already, but there's still not much of an appetite.

Also, Ruby flashed me! We're going to need to think of some new names.... :p

Were the eye issues caused by the coil lights? Seems alot of folks have had issues with them and torts eyes, I'm wondering why these companies continue to make them if they are blinding animals?

how long have you had them under the CFL before their eyelids swells up, and how far above them is the lamp?

My vet said that it could have been caused by a vitamin A deficiency, but as soon as I switched to the MVB both eyes were open, and our tortoise was much more active.

I bought my coil bulb after it was recommended by Petsmart. I had no idea how terrible they were until I joined the forum a few days ago. At least I spoke with the manager of the Petsmart that sold me the bulbs and explained my situation. He said they will recommend the MVB powersun from now on.

He was under it for 2 weeks, since I bought him, and the bulb was about eight inches from the bottom of the enclosure. The left I swelled shut last tuesday, and the right swelled shut this morning.

What are your temps and humidity? What are you feeding him? Was he on any meds? How's his activity, better, the same, worse? Maybe try soaking him in warm water and then giving him some food, see if that will perk him up to eat. Glad you found us to switch the lights. I wish everyone could get the stores to stop selling those awful lights.

I don't do anything for humidity, because I thought Greeks were supposed to have an arid environment? Should I be doing something else?

The hot end of the enclosure is 90 and the cool is 75. Then it is all 75 at night.

The vet subscribed a medicated eye ointment, which he is still receiving for another week and a half. He seems so much happier now, but refused lettuce, which he normally would devour.

I did get him to drink water mixed with carrot baby food today though. I am hoping that now that he's feeling better he will start to eat again. He hasn't passed stool since Friday, which I guess makes sense because he's not eating.

They don't need high humidity like redfoots, but Greeks should not be kept in arid conditions. Indoors, the humidity can be very low and air conditioning makes it worse.

Any suggestions on how to keep the right humidity level?

What coil uvb bulb were u using (like the brand and name?) I'm asking because I'm new to owning tortoises and want to know products to stay away from.

Stay away from ALL compact (coil) UVB lamps. The brand is irrelevant

I rescued a redfoot, the former owners named him ruby...thinking he was a she...he is a boy, lol...so we named him ruben...just a thought...i would stay away from those coiled bulbs. They are not good for your torts eyes. The pet stores dont have a clue. If you ever have questions, ask here or search prior discussions..

Fantastic. I also moved my bulb a foot from the top of the shell. Temps seem to be on target again with the MVB.

We also decided on naming him after Supernatural actor Misha Collins. The name is starting to stick. Thanks for all of the suggestions, especially Crowley. I was pushing for it!
