My male is close to 6 inches and very ready to breed, and she is closer to 7 inches. Ersnt and Lovich give a length of 6.2 to 6.4 inches for the minimum size at maturation for certain populations of Trachemys scripta.

I am pretty excited about them, as I've been waiting a while now. Good news for you is, that you can get a hatchling male and grow him up, since it doesn't take males very long at all to mature in comparison. Your girl could be a healthy 9 or 10 inches in a year, when the male caught up, maturity wise.

ha ha i would be too thats awesome! my thoughts exactly about the male, the bigger the better i hope she keeps the growth rate up

Those quick growth numbers would concern me, but not really given your beautiful photos. I obviously knew they could grow fast like that, but have never had any grow so quickly. I slow mine down a bit during the winter, as I do with all of my turtles. I am learning a bit from you and Gerard regarding this issue, and I am beginning to really see how much pond sliders may be immune to the detriments of rapid growth that are known to be a general rule of thumb for being cautious. We all have heard of fatty livers and curled marginal scutes being linked to rapid growth, but I can't believe how fast your animals have grown. Such an interesting thing. I have heard over the years of sliders growing fast and being fine, but the photo evidence goes a long way with this stuff.

Sliders are so amazing. We see some that are 2+ years old and have barely grown, due to their husbandry, then yours and Gerard's that have grown so rapidly and seem to be better off for it. Veery interesting

I have a Red Eared Slider. His name is Darwin. He is so sweet and easy to care for once I got the hang of it... I totally recommend the breed... Oh and Darwin is my first turtle.
