Does any one know how close the light should to the tortoise I do have an outside enclosure but some times it get below 60 in the winter

I have seen it to be not recommended any closer than 12 inches. You do not want to risk burning the shell.

Yes, at least 12 inches. What wattage is your bulb? The height can be determined how hot it is underneath at the 'shell level' :D

Do you have a temp gun? Or a digital thermometer? I would measure how hot it gets under the light if you move it (or even before, it might be just right!)
