I have a question on infrared heat sources. Tom mentioned that he didn't recommend using the infrared bulb that came with my tortoise starter kit. I am picking up my Russian (6months old) on Friday and I've set up the terrarium with the infrared light. I wanted to know why the infrared is not recommended, is it harmful to the tortoise. It's 100 W so is this going to be too hot? Should I buy a different heat source? Since the infrared bulb ( along with the mini deep dome to house it) came in the kit, I am hoping to not spend more money on a new heat source, but if I absolutely have to, I will.

Thanks!

Tortoises like to eat things that are red, this is where the bulb could cause some danger. Also, they should have it dark at night, like what is normal. It won't really hurt him to use it, but I would try to change it out as soon as possible and buy a ceramic heat emitter. They are fairly cheap, and last a very long time.
