George has quite long nails, I was wondering if I can clip them like I do my dog. I have lots of experience cutting pet nails, but just wondered if I can clip George's the same?

You sure can, but like your dog they have a quick, clip that and it'll bleed and possibly get infected. As long as you don't take too much off, you should be able to clip them. Maybe start really slowly, taking only a little bit off.

I prefer to give my tortoises some rough surfaces to walk on, wearing their nails. Large flat rocks within the enclosure serve nicely.

Thank you for your reply. I've just put him in his new tortoise table today, and I've put some rocks in there, so hopefully that will help. I may clip a little bit off them tomorrow.

Chris has covered it, really - but just to say that using a rough surface as an alternative won't help the current situation.

When I got Emrys he had long, curved nails. I had tiles in his enclosure that I hoped would wear them down, but they were too long and nothing changed, so I gave up and cut them. They've not grown since, but it needed that first step.

Thanks Cheryl, I'll clip them tomorrow. I'm sure he'll be happy about that, not!

Emrys was surprisingly calm. He was still a bit shy when I tried, and I expected to have to call on my fiance for help. It took about twenty seconds, in the end. I'd prepared for war. :p
