I am looking for a forum member who lives in Missouri, knows box turtles and knows Missouri law when it comes to box turtles.

Thanks-

I don't live in Missouri, but right across the river from St. Louis in Illinois. The three native box turtles here are the eastern, three toed, and ornate. The laws here state that no indigenous wild caght box turtles under 4 inches cannot be kept as pets, 6 of each of the three native species can be kept per year (18 total), indigenous box turtles under 4 inches may be kept as pets if they were captive bred; but there must be proof that they were. This is for Illinois and I don't know about Missouri. Sorry.

Is that 6 per year like 6 the first, 12 the next and so on or is that 6 per year total?

Send Danny a PM (egyptiandan). I don't know how he does it, but he has much, much knowledge of state laws.

You can collect six per year of each species, but only own six at a time. If you collected six one year you would have to get rid of one before another the next year. In other words, you can only own six at a time.

They don't actually consider the ornate a native species but I have seen them many times in the shawny forest in southern IL.

kind of off topic but the ornates sometimes will invade forested areas if there is little or no competition (other boxers).

Last I have read the ornate box turtle is on the threatened list in IL. just looked up 2011 DNR Fishing regulations in IL and it states that you need a fishing licence to collect turtles and how they may be taken, It states (8 turtles or frogs of each species daily catch limit. 16 turtles or frogs each species possession limit. (EXCLUDES reptiles or amphibians protected by endangered species act).
Please don't take any ones advice including mine for fact. look up the laws or contact department of natural resources and get laws and rules in writing, because he or she said or I thought could cost you some money in fines if they come knocking at your door. As for MO I would think there reptile collection would also come under there fishing regulations.

The books I have don't even include the ornates as a native species so wouldn't recomend keeping any in Illinois.
