My daughter and her 12 year old marginated just moved to Northampton Massachusetts. She built a temporary enclosure but he has escaped. She is devastated and has done all the right things such as putting up signs, informing the neighbors, calling local police and animal control, posting on local facebook groups and of course searching for hours with 5 friends. It is currently early September so not too cold yet. But she is near a heavily wooded area and we don’t know what to do next. Any advice? The tortoise is large, about 9 pounds and 12 inches. He has never hibernated before. She has had him since he was 3 months old.

So very sorry. Tell her to look in the mornings when the sun is out. Look in sunny spots specially in the wooded area and along the perimeter. During the hottest part of the day the tort will be harder to find as many will take shelter/dig in to get cooler, but then come back out around 4-5 to roam and eat more before hunkering down for the night.
Tell her to keep looking every day.
Keep us posted.
