Tom where is he at? Did you say Orange County? Do DT's (male) get along with each other or not?

The shelter is not supposed to adopt these out. It is illegal for them to take an adoption fee for him. They are supposed to contact the CTTC - and then you could adopt him from them.

The guy with the badge at the shelter said he was available and to go talk to the people up front. It was one of those "take a number" days and there were about 50 angry, frustrated, exasperated people ahead of me.

A few months ago I was going to get a CDT out of the Riverside shelter, but got there too late in the day. I contacted the Linda from the Chino CTTC, and she told me that the shelter is not supposed to adopt them out. They are supposed to turn them over to the CTTC - receiving any kind of money for CDT's is illegal. Linda went and got the tortoise out the next day, and then I adopted her - at no cost! I will contact Sharon at the OC CTTC. Anyone who wants to adopt this guy should contact her.

The basic rule-of-thumb at ALL CA shelters...You must have a F & G permit to 'adopt' a CDT...but then it's "released" i.e. no fees collected.

while the adoption fee should only be 10 dollars according to their own rules, they can't take money for them. try contacting the local CTTC and see if you can get it for free from them, sad to see the guy in what looks ilke a dog cage.

I believe there are now two CDTs at the Orange County Shelter, and according to the website, they are not available yet (but I would double check with the front desk to be 100% sure).

Also, yes, they are not supose to adopt them out to the public.
Mostlikely, the person you spoke to did not know what they were talking about (unfortunately happens alot).

There is also one in the San Diego Shelter, along with a Russian Tortoise!

The $10 fee is a general reptile fee...they CANNOT collect money for CDTs

From what I've been told, you can only get the permits from the CTTC now - so they are the only ones who can get them out. I did contact the OC CTTC.

Dean, nice to see you back!

I've got a F&G Permit for all the other exotics. Can I go get him?

... and USDA, and Fish and Wildlife, and County Animal Reg., and City Animal Reg., etc....

Let us know who gets this guy. I agree that he does not look very excited to be in that cage. :(

Yeah. I wasn't thrilled about the alfalfa hay and the tiny water bowl either.

YES! But ask them to provide you with a CDT registration card...if they don't have it, F&G will give it to you.

Most shelters have NO CLUE how to care for anything besised your basic domestic. its very sad to see some animals in shelters and how they are 'cared for'
Even after providing them with care sheets, the care is substandard. The two sulcatas I got from a shelter were in with a russian and red foot. No heat. they thought the russian was the baby of the sulcatas.. They knew they needed water/soaking so they put water in a baby pool from the hose, picked them up and put them in for 5 min and took them out. By the time I got them.. 2 weeks later.. they were sick from being cold and the owner, thank goodness.. claimed the smaller ones.. the things I see.... ugh...

Tom, I'm just a hop, skip & jump from the OC animal shelter, if you find out more info on this handsome fella, I could pick him up for you. If thats helps at all. I'd sure love him to go to someone like you.
