I’m thinking about purchasing a female sulcata but I’m not sure if this one is female or not. Don’t want to buy it and it ends up being a male. Any input is appreciated
I think this tortoise is on the cusp of changing. The small gular says female, however the tips of the anal scutes point outward, saying male. It will have to get a bit bigger for you to know for sure.
Ask yourself this question: Considering how big Sulcatas get and how many are being put into rescues already do you really want to bring more into the world to face a bleak future?
On the West Coast Sulcata are like feral cats. Too many in rescues, not enough homes for bigger torts. Please do not breed Sulcata and it looks male to me ...and I believe males are more out going....
The first picture is a male for sure. Even though the gulars aren't projecting yet, the shape of the supracaudal gives it away as it is already curving inward way past vertical. As Yvonne mentions, the anal scutes are shaping as male now too.
